How to navigate life so you can keep results without giving up things you love.
I first found my way to the gym at 13 years old. With delayed puberty, I was looking for a way to gain some weight to keep up in sports and simply to fit in.
I quickly developed shiny object syndrome, falling for just about everything out there.
I quickly realized I loved the game of nutrition and exercise more than sports themselves...I was hooked.
But without hormones on my side it didn’t really pay off much at all.
For the next 10 years I kept at it, trying anything with a sexy story online.
You name it, I tried it.
Keto, Paleo, Macros, Fasting, Meal Plans, Carb Backloading, HIIT, Crossfit, Olympic Weightlifting...the list goes on.
I definitely started seeing some changes, but I was still frustrated.
Why wasn’t my hard work paying off?
Looking back - my habits on the weekends with alcohol and food were severely holding me back.
After graduating college, I gave fitness my full attention, weekends included.
I got so obsessed that I quit my finance job and went to work in an Exercise Physiology lab.
I wanted to learn actual science instead of blindly believing some internet advice and spinning my wheels.
I wanted my hard work to pay off with actual results.
I started optimizing EVERYTHING I could:
Cardio
Weights
No alcohol
Food timing
Perfect sleep
Eating “Clean” foods
Tracking every gram of food
I even made time for float tanks and cryo chambers - any chance I could get better I would take.
The only “social” events I had were workouts, competitions, or something that could propel me forward fitness wise. #gains
Guess what? It finally worked.
I was stronger than ever.
I was leaner than ever.
My endurance was sky high.
Life was good, right? Wrong.
Although I finally got the results I had been chasing for so long...
I realized my health & fitness wasn’t adding to my life...
It was taking away from it.
I was a slave to perfection and “optimal”.
This didn’t seem right.
At 24 I joined the Fire Department and my fitness flat out fell apart.
I couldn’t get perfect sleep.
I didn’t have control over every meal.
My workouts would be disrupted by calls.
I’d miss workouts on days off trying to catch up on sleep.
I crashed and burned.
My “optimal” extreme diet and exercise were impossible to adhere to with other responsibilities.
I had to find out how to get results without being perfect.
I had the knowledge on how to optimize for results.
But I had been ignoring the tradeoffs.
I was stuck in the all or nothing mentality.
I could only get results with extreme approaches that took up all my focus and energy.
So instead of chasing 100% of things that made a difference...
I started to focus on the 20% of efforts that led to 80% of the results.
I chose to willingly ignore things that could help, but weren’t worth the time and energy tradeoff.
The result?
Less time in the gym.
More balance.
More food.
More life.
I was working out 3-4 times per week for under an hour.
I was eating my favorite foods in moderation.
I was prioritizing rest & recovery.
I felt better.
I looked better.
I had time for my career, family, and social life.
Less was more.
Around the same time, I realized how misguided many of my friends were.
Falling into the same gimmicks I wasted 10 years on.
I started to help them out.
Then my friend Christian came to me...
Christian had hit nearly 300 lbs and was miserable.
He had tried a bunch of diets and nothing stuck.
I started helping him out and steering him toward the “less is more” approach I found...
He officially hit 100 lb lost close to 3 years ago.
Since, then we’ve continued to work together...
He’s built more muscle, lost more fat, and he’s down an additional 25 lb
While maintaining his full time job and raising 2 sons with his wife.
This was 1,000x more meaningful than any job I ever had.
So I got my Precision Nutrition certification and started taking clients.
DataFit was born.
Since then I’ve helped 200 others transform their bodies and get out of the endless cycle I was in.
I’ve continued my education with Renaissance Periodization, Bro Research, and Flex Diet while focusing on Nutrition, Blood Chemistry, and Metabolic Flexibility.
Fast forward to today, my team and I continue coaching others to get lean, stay lean, and find balance in their life.
